Collaborations between rock or pop performers and symphony orchestras usually yield little more than bombast and redundancy, but Ben Folds' Live in Perth is a delightful exception. Recorded in 2005 in an outdoor venue (described by Folds as "a luminous green petri dish") in that Australian city, the 80-minute concert finds the singer-songwriter-pianist in the company of conductor Simon Kenway and the Western Australian Symphony Orchestra--not the world's finest classical ensemble, perhaps, but one that's perfectly matched to his quirky, affecting style. Favoring material from his Rockin' the Suburbs and Whatever and Ever Amen CDs, Folds used local musicians for most of the arrangements, with the result that the orchestra enhances the songs rather than merely augmenting them. Most of all, of course, it's the songs themselves that carry the day. There's a hint of Stephen Foster's parlor ballads in Folds' approach, especially the several songs that are in waltz time; there's also an undeniable poignancy to character-driven tunes like "Fred Jones Part 2," "Steven's Last Night in Town," "Boxing" (about sportscaster Howard Cosell, a curious choice of subjects if ever there was one!), and "Not the Same" that's vividly brought to life by WASO's string and percussion sections in particular. By the time you get to "Narcolepsy," the twelfth of the 14 songs performed here and one that features a co-vocal by operatic tenor Stuart Haycock, you can't help but be won over by this thoroughly charming show. --Sam Graham

With the blues finding ever greater audiences, first-rate blues bands are turning up in a lot of locales not normally thought of as meccas for the great American music form. The past couple of years have seen a lot of excellent albums from blues performers from all over the country.
This time we go very far afield,to a blues band from Australia called the Mighty Reapers. Actually, a couple of years back, the acclaimed Chicago label Alligator Records released the American debut by Dave Hole, a hot blues guitarist from the isolated Western Australian city of Perth. The Mighty Reapers are from the Sydney, generally considered the Australian cultural capital. The blues has become universal music, but regional styles have developed over the years in locales with active scenes. The blues from Memphis sounds different from Chicago or Texas-style blues. So what does blues with an Australian accent sound like? The Mighty Reapers, on the other hand, come up with their own distinctive but hard-to-place approach on the form. One can hear that their first influences are rock and jazz, and with a South African percussionist in the group, they add a vague world music twist. The style they favor leans toward the funky, with hits of James Brown in the tight, and often sophisticated horn arrangements that frequent the album, while lead vocalist Robert Susz is not exactly the Godfather of Soul, nor does he try to be. He sings more like a rock vocalist. It's interesting to note that two of The Mighty Reapers' members overlap with the eclectic world music and jazz group The Catholics, guitarist Dave Brewer and percussionist Sammila Sithole, along with James Greening, one of the members of the Rufus Horns. The other Reapers are bassist Vito Portolesi, drummer Antero Ceschin, and keyboard man Robert Woolf. The other two members of the Rufus Horns are trumpeter Miroslav Bukovsky, and tenor saxophonist Craig Walters.
