Ceramic plate, 'Golden Harvest'
List Price: |
DescriptionNOVICA, in association with National Geographic, searches the world to work directly with the finest artisan designers. Golden flowers adorn this delightful plate by Jorge Quevedo. Crafted by hand, its circular edges flow in delicate ruffles, and relief motifs add to its fascination. The deep cobalt is inspired by Mexico's traditional Talavera pottery. Quevedo imports lead-free glazes for a piece that is both decorative and useful. Artisan Info: "Hello, my name is Jorge Quevedo. The region where I was born and raised is renowned for its majolica ceramics. Although my family worked in other fields, I was fascinated by ceramics and, while still in high school, I took a job in a pottery workshop. There I learned the techniques and processes. After several years, I wanted to set up my own ceramics studio, and I saved up until I was finally able. It started out small, but little by little, my workshop grew. "We always found lead to be a problem. After researching and experimenting, I came to master the technique using white clay instead of those commonly used in the region. I also work with lead-free glazes so as to meet the expectations of today's shoppers. "The process begins by mixing the powdered clay with water to achieve a smooth, uniform paste. We shape it in molds or on the potter's wheel and let it dry thoroughly. We then smooth the fragile pieces and fire them at 800C [1,472F] for six hours to become cajete (bisque or biscuit). We draw the motifs freehand and, with natural Features

The Three Caballeros
List Price: |
DescriptionAs a Disney oddity, they don't get much odder than Three Caballeros. Donald Duck receives a birthday package from South America, and the film proceeds to unravel like some peyote-induced hallucination. It starts out reminiscent of other Disney films, where shorts are cobbled together, such as "Make Mine Music" or "Fun and Fancy Free." The film has vignettes such as "The Cold-Blooded Penguin" and "The Flying Guachito." After them it careens straight into part-travelogue, part-stream-of-consciousness animation. Not helping out much are Donald's "friends," Joe Carioca (a parrot) and Panchito (a rooster). They spend most of the rest of the film watching Donald chase skirt. That's right, Donald Duck is a wolf in this movie, and he chases every live-action seƱorita who bustles across the screen. Although some will say otherwise, Caballeros is for die-hard Disney, Donald, or psychedelia fans only. --Keith Simanton Features include: •MPAA Rating: G•Format: DVD•Runtime: 71 minutes |

Cheech & Chong
List Price: |
DescriptionThough it sounds like it was conceived and recorded between bong hits inside a college dormitory, Cheech & Chong's 1971 debut album was actually the product of years of comedic honing. In the late 1960s, guitarist Tommy Chong founded a musical/performance art troupe called City Works. The venture was short-lived, but it introduced him to fellow boho-prankster Richard "Cheech" Marin. When City Works faltered, the duo hitched their wagon to the burgeoning drug culture of the day, and Cheech & Chong was born. Their brand of humor wasn't particularly innovative--after all, making comedy for stoners is like preaching to the choir--but it was unquestionably of its time, and more importantly, it took greater steps toward anesthetizing the "drug menace" than any government program ever has. Cheech & Chong treats drug consumption as a harmless, hapless joke; "Drug Czar" William Bennett could learn a lot from these cats. --Matt Hanks All products are BRAND NEW and factory sealed. The Wild Bunch - The Original Director's Cut (Two-Disc Special Edition)
List Price: |
DescriptionHere's how director Sam Peckinpah described his motivation behind The Wild Bunch at the time of the film's 1969 release: "I was trying to tell a simple story about bad men in changing times. The Wild Bunch is simply what happens when killers go to Mexico. The strange thing is you feel a great sense of loss when these killers reach the end of the line." All of these statements are true, but they don't begin to cover the impact that Peckinpah's film had on the evolution of American movies. Now the film is most widely recognized as a milestone event in the escalation of screen violence, but that's a label of limited perspective. Of course, Peckinpah's bloody climactic gunfight became a masterfully directed, photographed, and edited ballet of graphic violence that transcended the conventional Western and moved into a slow-motion realm of pure cinematic intensity. But the film--surely one of the greatest Westerns ever made--is also a richly thematic tale of, as Peckinpah said, "bad men in changing times." The year is 1913 and the fading band of thieves known as the Wild Bunch (led by William Holden as Pike) decide to pull one last job before retirement. But an ambush foils their plans, and Peckinpah's film becomes an epic yet intimate tale of betrayed loyalties, tenacious rivalry, and the bunch's dogged determination to maintain their fading code of honor among thieves. The 144-minute director's cut enhances the theme of male bonding that recurs in many of Peckinpah's films, restoring deleted scenes to deepen the viewer's understanding of the friendship turned rivalry between Pike and his former friend Deke Thornton (Robert Ryan), who now leads a posse in pursuit of the bunch, a dimension that adds resonance to an already classic American film. The Wild Bunch is a masterpiece that should not be defined strictly in terms of its violence, but as a story of mythic proportion, brimming with rich characters and dialogue and the bittersweet irony of outlaw traditions on the wane. --Jeff Shannon In the Southwest of 1913, a gang of outlaws is coerced by a Mexican general into robbing a U.S. Army gun shipment, a move that has fatal consequences. William Holden, Ernest Borgnine, Warren Oates, Edmond O'Brien, and Robert Ryan star in this masterpiece from Sam Peckinpah, known for its bloody and balletic action scenes. 145 min. Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtracks: English Dolby Digital 5.1, French Dolby Digital Surround stereo; Subtitles: English, French, Spanish; audio commentary; theatrical trailers; deleted scenes; documentaries. Two-disc set. Features

The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (Two-Disc Special Edition)
List Price: |
DescriptionRanked at No. 30 on the American Film Institute's list of the 100 all-time greatest American films, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre is a genuine masterpiece that was, ironically, a box-office failure when released in 1948. At that time audiences didn't accept Humphrey Bogart in a role that was intentionally unappealing, but time has proven this to be one of Bogart's very best performances. It's a grand adventure and a superior character study built around the timeless themes of greed and moral corruption. As adapted by writer-director John Huston (from a novel by enigmatic author B. Traven) it became a definitive treatment of fate and futility in the obsessive pursuit of wealth. Bogart plays Fred C. Dobbs, a down-and-out wage-worker in Mexico who stakes his meager earnings on a gold-prospecting expedition to the Sierra mountains. He's joined by a grizzled old prospector (Walter Huston, the director's father) and a young, no-nonsense partner (Tim Holt), and when they strike a rich vein of gold, the movie becomes an observant study of wretched human behavior. Bogart is fiercely intense as his character grows increasingly paranoid and violent; Huston offers a compelling contrast as a weathered miner who's seen how gold can turn men into monsters. From its lively opening scenes (featuring young Robert Blake as a boy selling lottery tickets) to its final, devastating image of fateful irony, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre tells an unforgettable story of tragedy and truth. With dialogue that has been etched into the cultural consciousness (who can forget the Mexican bandit who snarls "I don't have to show you any stinking badges!") and well-earned Oscars for John and Walter Huston, this is an American classic that still packs a punch. --Jeff Shannon Writer/director John Huston's masterful study of greed stars Humphrey Bogart and Tim Holt as American vagrants in Mexico who team up with grizzled prospector Walter Huston in a search for gold that gets them far more than they ever imagined. Winner of three Academy Awards, the film also features Bruce Bennett, Barton MacLane, and Alfonso Bedoya as the bandit who "ain't got no badges." 126 min. Standard; Soundtrack: English Dolby Digital mono; Subtitles: English, Spanish, French; audio commentary; documentaries; 1949 "Lux Radio Theater" broadcast with cast; bonus cartoon "8 Ball Bunny" (1950); newsreel footage; photo gallery; more. Two-disc set. Features
